Basic Sweet and Sour Sauce

A basic sweet and sour sauce from Sandy H. Use this sweet and sour sauce with chicken wings, pork ribs, and more. Scroll down for more recipes.

Ingredients:

1/3 cup white or rice vinegar (Note: rice vinegar gives better results)
4 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 teaspoon soy sauce
2 teaspoons cornstarch mixed with 4 teaspoons water

INSTRUCTIONS
In a medium pot, mix vinegar, sugar, ketchup and soy sauce together; bring to a low boil.
In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water, then gently stir into the boiling pot.
Cook and stir until thickened.
Makes about 3 cups.

TIP: This doesn’t freeze as perfectly as some dishes, because of the cornstarch. It tastes the same, but looks separated and rather glumpy (I have no other word to use to describe it). If you don’t mind how it looks, it can be frozen, it just won’t be as attractive looking is all.
